In 2001, at the age of 16, Gabriel Smira was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma, which was located in his lower spine. Since then, he has not experienced a normal life. Gabriel spent his junior and senior year of high school in and out of the hospital undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. In 2002, Gabriel’s cancer went into remission, and he believed that his battle with cancer was over.
Unfortunately, in July of 2012, just 3 months before his wedding, Gabriel was diagnosed with another rare form of cancer in the same exact location. This new cancer was caused from the radiation treatment that he received in high school. After 10 months of an intense chemotherapy regiment, Gabriel’s only chance of survival was to undergo 2 extremely risky surgeries where they had to remove the left half of his lower spine and pelvis. He was hospitalized for 5 weeks at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas. Gabriel will undergo daily physical therapy sessions for the next year, in order to learn how to walk again. During this time, he will not be able to work. Gabriel is not fighting this battle alone. His wife, Ashley, has been by his side the entire time.
The goal of this fundraiser is to help pay for a portion of the massive medical expenses they have acquired since his diagnosis, as well as loss of wages and life savings. We hope that this will allow Gabriel and Ashley to finally begin their wonderful life together, cancer free.
