The Future of Education #4:
Alternative Education and Innovative Schools in New York

There is no one-size-fits-all way to learn. Innovative leaders across the country are experimenting with alternative teaching methods and building schools and programs that look very different from the schools many of us are familiar with. At this event, we’ll hear from a panel of speakers working at innovative schools and programs across New York.

{Drinks and snacks will be provided!}

7:00-8:30pm Activity, Panel Discussion, Q&A
8:30-9:00pm Networking

Our Guests Include:

Francis Mechner, PhD, Director
Queens Paideia School

Queens Paideia School is an independent K-12 school that implements widely accepted tenets of educational theory. Through a 6:1 student-teacher ratio, the school provides students with individualized learning plans that are continuously updated, and focused attention on students’ personal development. The school was founded in 2009 by a group of educators and parents who shared the concern that traditional large classrooms, with their high student-teacher ratios and limited methodology, cannot accommodate the needs or consider the true potential of most children.

Steven Hodas, Executive Director
Innovate NYC Schools

Innovate NYC Schools is the iZone's initiative to discover and expand educational technologies with high potential for transforming classrooms toward more personalized, student-centered models.  Innovate NYC Schools identifies key learning challenges, prototypes and evaluates the impact of innovations on all aspects of student, school, and district performance, and then actively shares findings with educators and technology developers. Funded in part by the US Department of Education's Investing in Innovation (i3) program, Innovate NYC Schools helps districts benefit from best practices of the early-stage edtech community and drives smarter investments in educational technology by schools, districts, funders and solution developers. Innovate NYC Schools also oversees School of One.

Jonathan Hirsch, Director
LIFE School

The LIFE (Learning Interdependently From Experience) School is a program for juniors and seniors which emphasizes collaboration and community bonds. The rigorous academic program is characterized by project based learning and a curriculum that emphasizes urgent real world problems so that students can pursue social justice as they work towards solutions. Other unique aspects of the program include: advisories, community meetings, internships, blocked scheduling, piloting iPads in the classroom, and field work.  After LIFE School, there is a wide range of student outcomes.  Students have gone on to Ivy League colleges and universities, small liberal arts colleges, large state universities, 2 year schools, the Army, Gap Years, and everything in between.

Allyson Crawford, Managing Director, External Affairs
Citizen Schools

Citizen Schools is dedicated to helping all children discover and achieve their dreams. We mobilize a team to enable public middle schools in low-income communities to provide a longer learning day rich with opportunities. Our deep partnerships with schools put young adults on track to succeedby connecting the resources of communities, companies, governments, and philanthropies.

Seung C. Yu, Principal
Academy for Software Engineering (AFSE)

The Academy for Software Engineering is a new high school for the design and development of software applications. At AFSE every student has a personalized pathway and innovative curriculum and workshops in the school are created by talented educators and leaders in software development.

Britt Neuhas, Director of Special Projects

In 2010, the NYCDOE launched the Innovation Zone (iZone), a dedicated Office of Innovation that would support schools in personalizing learning to accelerate college and career readiness among our students. The iZone supports a community of over 300 schools, and aims to increase college and career readiness by supporting educational models that will best meet the needs, motivations and strengths of each student.

Knewton & Be Social Change

The Future of Education Series is a collaboration between Knewton and Be Social Change aimed at fostering discussion, accelerating connection, and elevating the conversation around the future of education. The series will explore alternative routes to learning, shifting educational paradigms, adaptive learning platforms, and the institutions and individuals who are addressing education innovation along the learning continuum.

What does education look like going forward? How do we improve access? How do we work around, break through, or work with the current system as we know it? Who are great teachers and what have they learned along the way? How do we prepare and inspire students? Teachers, parents, students, administrators education enthusiasts, visionaries, and entrepreneurs are invited to discuss and debate the future of education.
