Event description

Description

What's the difference between a mushroom and a toadstool? How many different varieties are there, and how can I tell which ones are edible? Why do they appear after rain, and how long do they stay around?

Come to The Asheville Mushroom Club's FungiFest at Warren Wilson College on Saturday, Sept. 2, and get answers to all the questions you ever had about mushrooms and the ones you you never thought to ask!

As well as a huge display of wild mushrooms in all their varied shapes and colors, we'll have educational displays, classes, guided mushroom walks in the college grounds, and vendors selling edible mushrooms, cultivation supplies, fungi-themed crafts & gifts, and more. AMC members will be on hand to answer questions and will even try to identify any mushrooms you bring in.

Entrance fees at the door (Bryson Bulding) will be: Adults $10; Students & AMC Members $5; Free for children 5 & under and Warren Wilson students. Get 20% discount by registering here in advance. Admission starts at 10:00am, except for those registered for the 9:00am class.

Classes and Mushroom Walks run throughout the day and cost $15 each in addition to the entrance fee (only $10 if you book in advance on this site). Space is limited so book now and get the discount. Classes (apart from the 9:00 AM class) are in the Kittredge Building. Mushroom Walks start from the front of the Bryson Building

FAQs

Driving Directions and Parking

From Asheville; take I-40 E to exit 55. Turn left then right on US 70. After 1.7 miles turn left on Warren Wilson Rd (look for Fungifest sign) and drive another 1.8 miles, past the South and North Entrances, and turn right into the Kittredge parking area. If this is full, there will be signs to an overflow parking area. Pedestrian signs will guide you to Fungifest in the Bryson Building.

Is Fungifest suitable for kids?

Yes, children 6 and up are generally fascinated by mushrooms and will learn a lot. But you must keep a very firm hold on your toddler. If she puts anything from the display into her mouth you may have to take her to the emergency room!

May I bring in mushrooms for identification?

Yes, we will do our best to tell you what they are. Just don't expect recommendations on edibility.

Can I pick mushrooms at Warren Wilson College

No, that's not allowed by the college.

Should I bring my printed ticket?

Please do print and bring your ticket(s) for entrance and any classes you have registered for.

What's the refund policy?

We do not provide refunds, but if you can't come you may give your ticket to someone else.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Use the CONTACT button on this page to email us.
