Event Details

Many of San Francisco's Asian massage parlors -- long an established part of the city's sexually permissive culture -- have degenerated into something much more sinister: international sex slave shops.

Once limited to infamous locales such as Bombay and Bangkok, sex trafficking is now an $8 billion international business, with San Francisco among its largest commercial centers.

San Francisco's liberal attitude toward sex, the city's history of arresting prostitutes instead of pimps, and its large immigrant population have made it one of the top American cities for international sex traffickers to do business undetected,

Women trafficked for the sex industry are predominantly from Southeast Asia, the former Soviet Union and South America -- lured to the United States by promises of lucrative jobs as models or hostesses, only to be sold to brothels, strip clubs and outcall services and extorted into working off thousands of dollars in surprise travel debts to their new "owners." Traffickers fly the women to Canada or Mexico, and walk or drive them into California.

Ruthie Kim started Because Justice Matters because she had seen her fair share of injustice. she had watched seedy massage parlors pop up in her neighborhood, witnessed immigrants face the difficult transitions of life there in ‘Little Saigon’ and had seen one too many women with a black eye. Out of this need to address issues of injustice, Because Justice Matters was birthed. It started small and has gradually gathered momentum.

Their goal is to educate, network and work towards ending various forms of injustice. They do this through coming alongside existing organizations and agencies and joining their efforts, engaging those from various religious faith backgrounds around current and pressing issues and striving to provide resources for anyone interested in joining this fight.

We want to see hope and dignity restored to every victim. We want to see systems change that benefit the abused and not the abuser. We want to see justice for every individual and every family. We are committed to the small steps that offer simple solidarity to someone in need as well as the large leaps that seek to end injustice and hold the guilty responsible.

Because Justice Matters also reaches out to women who are currently exploited in the sex industry through street outreach and womens events every three months. These days attract over 100 women, providing referrals, free gifts, ice cream and much more! Free nail painting is also offered on Monday afternoons to women in the Tenderloin, offering an opportunity for women to take a break and find emotional support in the midst of difficult situations.

** There will be a silent auction going on throughout the whole event. Some items include: A weekend in Napa, personal training sessions, 4 tickets to Peter Pan, and much more!
** LOCAL San Francisco celebrities will be coming. Ranging from television, news, and business.

** SugarCafe has amazing food and wine. When you purchase an appetizer $1.00 will be donated to Because Justice Matters.
