Description

Making a documentary film is exciting, but raising money to make that film can damper that excitement. Raising funds to complete your film is hard work. The good news is that there is a potential audience for every film, and there is also potential money for every film. However, you must take on the challenge to find that audience and find that money. If you think that you have a fantastic idea, you must still prove that others will feel the same way. You must be able to address the basic questions of need, audience, distribution, marketing, crew, budget, and, of course, funding. Some projects raise money following a patchwork strategy by receiving money from different sources. Some projects are supported by one big funder. What’s your strategy?

In this workshop we’ll discuss the following questions:

-What is the right mindset to start raising money for my project?

-Am I prepared to start fundraising for my project?

-Where is the money coming from?

-What is the right fundraising strategy for my film?

We’ll have also interactive breakout sessions in which you will be able to discuss your project and come up with specific funding ideas.


ABOUT THE PRESENTER

ADELE SCHMIDT

Adele Schmidt is no stranger to the Docs In Progress community. As the co-founder of the organization in 2004 and staff member from 2009-2010, Adele was instrumental in helping the organization expand beyond its signature work-in-progress screenings to provide a full array of educational, professional development, and mentoring programs for emerging documentary filmmakers. In addition to more than 15 years working as a producer, director, editor, and consulting producer for award-winning long-form documentaries and short feature films, Adele has extensive teaching experience in film and video production -- at American University, Catholic University of America, Fairfax Public Access TV, and at a film school in Mexico City. She has also served as a panelist for the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, reviewing applications in the disciplines of writing, philosophy, history, and media arts.

NOTE ON PAYMENT

Full payment must be received to guarantee you a spot in the class. In order to get the discounted earlybird rate, full payment must be RECEIVED by the earlybird date. Otherwise the regular rate will be charged.

*NOTE: Our office is on the ground floor of the Alexander House Apartment Complex. However, you must use the street entrance located on Apple Avenue to enter. Please do not go through the main entrance of Alexander House.


REFUND POLICY

If your circumstances change and you must withdraw from a class after registering, please be aware of our refund policy:

Withdrawal 30 or more calendar days before the first day of a program: 75% refund

Withdrawal 11-29 calendar days before the first day of a program: 50% refund

Withdrawal 10 or fewer calendar days before a program: No refund


WEATHER POLICY

In the event of seriously inclement weather, we will make a decision by 3 pm on whether to cancel that evening’s programs. (For Saturday classes, we will make the decision by 6 pm on Friday). If you have not received a notification from your instructor or the Educational Programs Manager, call our office at 301-789-2797 (we will have an outgoing message on voicemail).
