The Workshop: Fundamentals of Self-Suspension

This hands-on workshop introduces Parker RopeBoi’s approach to shibari self-suspension. The workshop will cover similarities and differences between self-suspension and partner suspension, equipment, fundamental skills, general strategies and guiding principles, specific techniques, risks and risk reduction strategies. The hands-on portion of the class will include skill-building exercises for practicing key self-suspension skills, such as one-handed tying, tying without seeing, using your toes, using your core, and using your face. Techniques for attaching and securing suspension lines, line management, going up and coming down, and dealing with rope jams will be covered, with content adjusted for students' preparedness and skill level. Proprioception, body awareness, physical control, and play in self-suspension will be introduced.

Required Prerequisites: Facility with rope-handling techniques, controlling tension, attaching a new rope, square knot, half-hitch, a single-column tie (e.g. Somerville Bowline), a suspension-worthy arms-free chest harness for attaching in front (here's one such option/example). Recommended Prerequisites: Knowledge of a hip harness (for example, this one) is helpful but not an absolute requirement. Some prior experience with self-suspension is helpful but not required.

Unsure whether your experience/skills are appropriate for the class? Please contact Parker directly at ropeboi@gmail to ask.

Want to brush up on your column ties, chest harness, and hip harness before the class? Contact Parker at ropeboi@gmail to sign up for a pre-workshop lesson that will cover the workshop prerequisites.

About the Instructor:

Parker (RopeBoi) is your friendly neighborhood queer rope artist, who enjoys creatively using rope for self-tying and tying others. Since 2009, Parker has presented rope performances and taught rope workshops across North America and Europe. Parker has gained an international reputation as a self-suspension performer and presenter and for their distinctive techniques and style. Parker has had the privilege of learning from some preeminent rope teachers and tying with some amazing partners and collaborators, which in turn inform Parker's solo rope practice. Parker respects that all bodies are different and that there are no “one-size-fits-all” ties, and welcomes participants of all genders and orientations. Parker offers private rope lessons for individuals, pairs, and groups, at all levels from novice to advanced, in Brooklyn and beyond.
