COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will introduce participants to John Krauss’ Functional Massage for management of upper and lower extremity movement impairments related to sports medicine. Differential structural diagnostic tests will be introduced to explore muscle pathology. It will feature manual practice skills and interventions which impacts clinical success with all ages and orthopedic pathologies. Participants will explore the correlation between changes in muscle length and quality pertaining to common orthopedic pathologies and learn how to restore myofascial and periarticular flexibility for a comprehensive physical therapy treatment approach.


ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Dhana Ponners DPT, OMPT

Dr. Ponners is a clinical instructor, guest lecturer and lab assistant at Oakland University where she works closely with Dr. Krauss. Dr. Ponners received her MPT in 1993, completed her OMPT certificate in 1997 and earned her DPT in 2013 from Oakland University. As a full-time clinician and Director of the Training Room, Dr. Ponners specializes in the use of manual therapy and therapeutic exercise when treating the athletic population, emphasizing return-to-sport and function. Dr. Ponners has over 19 years of teaching experience in the university, hospital and clinical settings.


Dawn Thomas DScPT, OMPT

Dr. Thomas completed her Masters in Physical Therapy in 1995, her Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy Certificate in 2000, and her Doctorate of Science in Physical Therapy in 2016. Dr. Thomas is a clinician primarily in an outpatient.


LEARNTING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Describe an adaptive systematic approach for diagnosing and managing myofascial and periarticular restrictions related to dysfunction in the upper and lower extremities.

• Perform Functional Massage manual techniques used to restore myofascial and periarticular flexibility in upper and lower extremities related to post-operative and sports related injuries in an orthopedic population.

• Analyze the correlation between change in muscle length, quality, and common orthopedic pathologies in the extremities.

• Identify clinical examples which highlight methods of integrating Functional Massage into a comprehensive physical therapy treatment approach related to an athletic population related to impairments.


Continuing Education

UMHS MedSport, BOC AP#: P546, is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers. This program is eligible for a maximum of 12 Category A hours/CEUs. ATs should claim only those hours actually spent in the educational program.
