Description

Grab your school aged kid, alert the secret service, engage the motorcade and head to the National First Ladies’ Library for our exciting new kids’ program. Each month will feature flotus inspired activities that will immerse your kid in history through hands-on learning experiences. Have your social secretary pencil in the third Saturday of each month at 10:30 AM (unless otherwise noted). This free program is best for ages 5 - 8. Advanced registration is recommended.

President’s and First Ladies' Day, February 15
Celebrate President’s Day, and the First Ladies’ Day too, with a special visit from picture book illustrator Dave Szalay. He’ll read and draw from his new book The Superlative A. Lincoln: Poems About Our 16th President and we’ll make presidential artwork inspired by the presidential portraits on our loose change.

Vote Like a Girl, March 21
Did you know that the 19th amendment celebrates its 100th birthday this year? Learn about suffragettes and gents who worked hard to get women the right to vote. We’ll read Miss Paul and the President, create our own suffragette sashes, and vote for our favorite pizza topping as we learn about voting rights.

Celebrate Earth Day with Lady Bird, April 18
Lady Bird Johnson was passionate about conserving our natural resources, protecting our wildlife and beautifying America through her work on the passage of the Highway Beautification Act of 1965. Lady Bird’s efforts began before any significant legislation was passed to conserve our planet. We’ll celebrate Earth Day and Lady Bird’s efforts as we read Lady Bird’s Wildflower, craft flowers out of recyclables and create our own seed bombs.

Around the World with the First Ladies, May 16
Get your passport stamped as you move from station to station and experience the many landmark travels of the first ladies through hands-on activities. Learn about Hillary Clinton’s famous speech in Beijing, Pat Nixon’s hurricane aid in Peru, and Jackie Kennedy’s Mona Lisa loan in Paris during this virtual road trip experience.

Fun and Fitness in the First Garden, June 20
Let’s move, shimmy and shake during Fun, Fitness and the First Garden. Students will learn all about healthy eating from our friendly veggie friends and the White House Chef. We’ll get moving to a Michelle Obama inspired dance party mix and create veggie prints. We’ll wrap things up with a fun planting activity that will allow kids to start their own White House Garden at home.

Tea Party in the USA, July 18
We all know about the founding fathers, but let’s explore the role women played in the American Revolution. Learn about Sarah Fulton, the “mother of the Boston Tea Party”, Sybil Ludington, the “female Paul Revere”, first lady Abigail Adams, and many more women who helped shape this country. We’ll top off our discussion with some Fourth of July fireworks inspired tea bag painting.
