About the Topic:
The third wave of behaviorism examines the relationship we have with our thoughts and feelings and not necessarily the content of them. A key concept in the third wave is the concept of mindfulness which is a broad topic that has the potential to be misunderstood. Throughout this presentation, we will define mindfulness as well as acceptance and how they can be practically applied when conducting psychotherapy. We will explore ways to use action-oriented techniques to help clients gain a clearer understanding of concepts commonly used in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Attendees will gain an understanding of how our minds can
bombard us with unhelpful thoughts, feelings, and memories and how we can minimize the impact on our lives through the incorporation of experiential activities. This presentation is not only geared towards work with clients, it will also review how the practitioner can be just as susceptible to "unhelpful" thoughts and the impact this can have on the therapeutic relationship if not addressed. This presentation will be interactive and will include experiential activities.

Objectives:
Following the presentation participants will be able to differentiate first, second, and third waves of behaviorism and define key components of each.

Following this presentation participants will be able to perform two defusion techniques in the psychotherapeutic setting.

Following this presentation participants will be able to identify 3 factors that determine the client’s readiness for action-oriented work.

Following this presentation participants will be able to set up and conduct an action-oriented drama piece that cultivates acceptance and value identification.
