Description

The National Center for Atmospheric Research invites you to join us for the first lecture in the 2017 NCAR Explorer Series:

On January 7th, get the inside scoop on Front Range Air Quality, with NCAR's Scientists Frank Flocke and Gabi Pfister.

3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Our hands-on exhibits about weather, climate, and the Sun-Earth connection will be open for viewing before the talk (staff will be on hand to answer your questions)

4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Talk by Frank Flocke and Gabi Pfister: "Front Range Air Quality: Impacts on You and Your Colorado Playground"

5:00 - 5:30 p.m. Questions & conversations

Talk Description:

Poor air quality — air pollution — can pose a major risk to the health of people and other living things. In the summer of 2014, scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and partner organizations launched a major field campaign called FRAPPÉ — the Front Range Air Pollution and Photochemistry Experiment. Using research aircraft, mobile radars, balloon-mounted sensors, and complex computer simulations, FRAPPÉ measured air pollution across the Front Range of Colorado and tracked the origins of summertime ozone, an invisible but harmful pollutant that can irritate or damage lungs, reduce crop yields, and harm forests. Find out what’s in the air we breathe, how far it travels, and what we know and don’t know about the origins of Front Range pollution. We will also discuss what researchers are doing to advance scientific understanding insupport of informed decision making to limit pollutant emissions and exposure.

Admission is free, however seating is limited. In order to ensure a seat in the lecture hall, please obtain a free Evenbrite ticket. A sign language interpreter will be present at the lecture.

If there are no tickets remaining, we encourage you to join the waitlist. There are typically several people with tickets who do not show up to the events, hence waitlisted individuals have a good chance of being able to fit in the Main Seminar Room.
