Event description

Description

This 8 week session begins at the beginning: cutting and types of glass and works through the concepts and techniques listed below but ends in the hot shop with glass blowing instructors. This course is suitable for the true beginner and the experienced, though rusty, artist. Along the way the student will make several flat and formed pieces as in the “From Zero to OMG !” course, but in this case, the student will prepare a round or rectangular fused glass piece that will be incorporated into a blown glass vessel that you help make with the instructors. Students will buy glass needed for their projects and basic hand tools (glass cutter, running pliers, nippers, safety glasses, and others as come in handy for their projects). Students will receive a discount on purchases during their enrollment and can bring tools if they already own some. 24 Hour total course time. Course fee: $230. Material Estimate: Between $50 and $200 based on student choices.
Topics and techniques include:
• Safety precautions
• Glass cutting techniques by hand (pattern cutters, running pliers, nippers, Morton Glass systems, etc.)
• Fusing concepts (coefficient of thermal expansion, reactive glass, dichroic glass, etc.)
• Firing schedules, kilns, and maintenance
• Glass circle cutting, common glass equipment (grinders, ring saws, band saws, diamond saws, tile saws)
