From the Mountains: Woodblock Prints by Matt Brown

The spring art show at Aryaloka will feature the color woodblock prints of New Hampshire artist Matt Brown. Matt creates gorgeous prints of New England mountains, lakes and rocky shorelines. He uses the traditional Japanese moku hanga method of woodblock printing, a technique developed during the Edo period when Japan was isolated from the rest of the world. This is the technique used to make the ukiyo-e prints of Hokusai, Hiroshige, Kunisada and others. These are prints made entirely by hand , color by color, from multiple carved blocks. Matt’s printing materials are water, rice paste, and pigment, his printing tools are brushes and a handheld tool for pressing paper to block called a baren. Mostly self-taught in his printing practice, Matt began his experiments after seeing an exhibit of Japanese prints at the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College in 1993. The exhibit will run at Aryaloka during April and May 2019.
