Description
Please mark your calendar and save the date for another very special storytelling concert. On Saturday, March 26, 2016, The Institute of Musical Arts is proud to present “From the Mexican Border to East Los Angeles", a solo performance of stories by Storyteller, Performance Artist, Writer and Teacher, Olga Loya.
Olga Loya performs a mix of Spanish and English to share traditional tales from Latin America, as well as stories from her own varied and colorful life growing up in East Los Angeles. Known nationally and described as an "alchemist" who can conjure up images and fill them with life, her shows are bursting with color and passion. Her stories are inspired by legend and current headlines, reality and dreams, ancient myths and personal experience, healing stories and tales of extraordinary women, all shared with imagination and exuberance as Olga uses her voice, body, and sometimes music and dance, to draw her audience into the imaginative and surprising worlds of the tales she tells.
In “From the Mexican Border to East Los Angeles" we will join her on a trip through her family album as she entertains us with personal and family stories about love, escapes, Pancho Villa, celebrations, broken knuckles, mustaches and more. Olga's stories support her beliefs that we can work together as a community; that we can learn to be more compassionate with each other; that family is important; and that we should take the time to enjoy ourselves through stories and song.
She performs and teaches workshops at a wide variety of locations including, schools, businesses, museums and festivals, such as the Guadalajara, Mexico Festival and the Jonesborough National Storytelling Festival. Olga was the recipient of the National Network of Storytellers 2013 Oracle Award in The Circle of Excellence. She has livedand performs in Northern California, for the past several years, so we feel especially lucky to have her visit with us, and grace our stage.
As is our custom at the Institute of Musical Arts, a catered reception will follow the performance.
Ours is a small, intimate theater, and we do expect a robust response.
