Being traumatized in childhood leaves survivors reeling as adults. Instead of finally benefitting from the freedom of leaving a traumatized environment, survivors begin to realize that the trauma story stays with them long into adulthood. As young adults, struggles with anxiety and depression, safety, sexuality, relationships, career, eating, sleeping, and self-care start to arise. Deep despair often sets in over time, nagging survivors inside, leaving them feeling haunted, alone, and different than those around them. Injuries in core attachment relationships leave survivors feeling deeply ashamed, isolated, unprotected, and unsure of where to turn. Ultimately, the deep wounds in childhood remain alive deep inside in so many ways, keeping the trauma alive in present day.

In this 3 part workshop, Tovah will address the legacy of trauma that has imprinted survivors and kept the inner child’s wounds unaddressed. In these workshops you will learn:

  • How to continue the work of identifying your own unique trauma story

  • How you were impacted (as a child) and are impacted (as an adult) by sexual, physical, emotional, and neglectful abuse that occurs in relationships

  • How survivors cope with being traumatized and how those coping skills can be slowly transformed in treatment with a relational and harm reduction approach

  • How to explore gaps in memory, confusion around memory, and how to allow your own story to safely unfold over time, helping to create a narrative that makes meaning of the traumas you experienced

  • How to identify some of your trauma responses as you continue to re-live the past trauma in current day

  • Techniques for both grounding (for when you feel out of your body, detached, depressed, despairing or numb) and self-comforting/self-care (when you feel on high alert, anxious, panicked, terrified)

  • How to get to know some of your common defenses, fears, and tendencies in life and relationships because of your traumatic experiences

  • How to address feelings of shame and deep despair and hopelessness

  • How to listen to and hear some of the dreams and wishes of your injured child and how to support those as an adult

  • How to make sure you are in supportive, holistic, and most importantly, safe relationships and treatments that support your healing

In order for the workshop to feel safe and contained, participants will not be expected to share out loud, identify themselves or anything that makes them uncomfortable. This workshop is most appropriate for client’s who are in a safe therapy relationship and is an adjunct to treatment. It will be a lecture style workshop and not a process group.
