From Self to Systems: Leadership for Collective Impact
Event Information
Description
We invite you to join us for From Self to Systems: Leadership for Collective Impact, a new three day Collective Impact Forum training that focuses on developing the skills, practices, and capacities that leaders can apply to their collective impact initiatives to achieve greater, more lasting results.
About this Workshop
Collective impact efforts involve complex leadership challenges that call for new mindsets, tools, and practices. We have learned from the field some of the big challenges leaders face- aligning groups behind a common agenda and result; building trust among people with different backgrounds, positions, and interests; and understanding and helping others navigate the complex systems involved with achieving tangible community-wide change. We believe leaders must first look within (to consider one’s own contribution to the problem and the solution), then to others (to catalyze broader leadership in the change process), then to the whole system (to better understand the complex dynamics that prevent or accelerate progress). This three day training will equip leaders with the self-awareness, collaborative skills, and system thinking practices that will help participants advance past some of the common barriers that hinder collective impact.
Who is this workshop for?
Whether you are a member of the backbone team, a funder, a service provider, or a member of the community, this training will develop your leadership to work with others more inclusively, collaboratively, and strategically to achieve greater change.
What will you learn during this workshop?
Over three days, you will be part of a cohort of colleagues that will move through three stages of leadership development.
- Leading Self: Learn how to identify your own leadership strengths and purpose, to balance confidence and humility, to shift the role you play at different tables within your collaborative, and to maintain accountability in recognizing and furthering racial equity within your initiative.
- Leading Others: Learn methods for building trust, understanding different leadership styles, giving and receiving feedback, and facilitating the difficult conversations that are often necessary to achieve greater inclusion, innovation, and alignment.
- Leading Systems: Learn to embrace an emergent approach to leadership, by adopting mental model shifts that truly acknowledge the complexity of systems change.
Who will be leading this training?
This training will be led by a small core group of faculty, including:
- Sujatha Jesudason, Executive Director, CoreAlign
- John Kania, Managing Director, FSG
- Paul Schmitz, Senior Advisor, Collective Impact Forum

We will draw on your experience and create a highly interactive learning environment that will be results-focused and emphasize real world application to address the challenges you face in your collective impact work.

Organizer Collective Impact Forum
Organizer of From Self to Systems: Leadership for Collective Impact
The Collective Impact Forum, an initiative of FSG and the Aspen Institute Forum for Community Solutions, exists to support the efforts of those who are practicing collective impact in the field. While the rewards of collective impact can be great, the work is often demanding. Those who practice it must keep themselves and their teams motivated and moving forward.
The Collective Impact Forum is the place to find the tools and training that can help achieve success. It’s an expanding network of like-minded individuals coming together from across sectors to share useful experience and knowledge and thereby accelerating the effectiveness of the collective impact approach as a whole.
