Description

Kelby James Russell Cabernet FrancThe five wines in this flight give us a chance to explore one of the most rewarding parts of working the Finger Lakes; the breadth of our terroir. Firmly between the classic wine 'old world' of Europe and the 'new world' of California - and especially Australia - the Finger Lakes can display the best of both. Whether it is the food-driven, savory wines of the Old World or the fruit-forward, joyful wines of the New World, those of us in the Finger Lakes have the vintage variation to make the former and the cultural background to make the latter.

...And we've paired the wines with a tasting plate designed by the Bistro chef, Jeremy Personius.

This tasting is limited to 10 people, by reservation, and is curated exclusively by one of the Red Newt team with in depth insights and commentary on the wines and the food.

From Newest World to Old World; Finger Lakes in the Balance
Friday, May 5th - Sunday, May 28th 11:30am & 3:30pm

This flight begins three wines under the KJR winemaker signature label. The final two wines continue on the theme of Cabernet Franc through very distinctive expressions. Three of these wines display the breadth of the KJR portfolio: Four of these five wines explore this theme through the lens of Cabernet Franc and the old world lens of vintage variation.

The 2013 KJR Dry Riesling modeled on the newest of new world regions, Australia, that features the biscuit and toast aromas one would normally associate with the Old World. Australian Riesling is a classic style that receives little attention in the US, but these electrically dry wines have amazing aging and evolution potential. At four years old, this vintage is just now starting to come into its own, and likely will only improve going forward for many more years.

The 2016 KJR Rosé of Cabernet Franc takes the old style of French rosé and spins it on its head; explosively fruit forward on the nose and palate, crackle-ingly dry, and with an almost neon hue from the backbreaking work of cold soaking the fruit for three days at 35F. It is an old style made new again.

From the same vineyard, is the 2015 KJR Cabernet Franc is a sharp contrast. This red wine firmly looks to the Loire Valley of France for its inspiration, featuring an intense earthiness and savoriness on the nose that is a stark reminder of Cabernet Franc's herbal and old world side. Aged in older french oak barrels to minimize oak aromatics while still retaining the tannin influence, this wine is also basket pressed after fermentation as another nod to the old world.

The 2014 Red Newt Cabernet Franc is joyful and juicy, as a point of contrast. Fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel, this Cabernet Franc is bright and engaging in nearly every way. Where the 2015 KJR might be a bit too intense to enjoy fully on its own without food, the 2014 Red Newt is equally at home on the table or with a slight chill on the porch.

Last but not least, the 2013 Glacier Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Franc is our most age worthy and terroir driven expression of the grape. With more natural tannin and aromatics that take several years to unpack themselves and develop, at its best it is a marriage of what makes the prior to Cabernet Francs unique. Dense fruit, but with a black pepper spice, great structure; it is a vineyard we adore working with.
