Description

Taking the leap from education to employment (including self-employment!) can be quite a challenge. From securing your ideal job, to completing those first few weeks in your new office, it can be a nerve wracking, yet exciting journey.

Whether you're yet to secure your perfect graduate job, are about to embark on an self-employed adventure, have already found the opportunity for you, or aren't sure what you're going to do next, Solent Futures are here to prepare you for all aspects of life after graduation. We are hosting a one day conference for our 2019 leavers and recent graduates that will include talks by some of the UK's top employers, as well as hands-on sessions giving you the opportunity to practise your newly developed skills.

At some points of the day we'll be running more than one session at a time (these sessions are marked with a asterisk *). This allows you to attend the sessions that you feel are most relevant to you. Please select your preferences using this link.


What to expect on the day:

  • Civil Service Fast Stream - No matter what your degree discipline or background the Civil Service Fast Stream has something for you. They are looking for people from all backgrounds to become our future senior leaders. The award-winning graduate leadership development programme offers structured development with a choice of 15 government professions.

  • Preparing for work as a graduate, Hays* - This session will give you key tips and advice to make an impact both in meetings and at interviews. Come and hear from two Directors at Hays (one of which is a Solent alumni). Hays are the UK and Ireland’s most successful recruitment business and they have 9,000 employees globally in 33 countries.

  • Finding your path, Mildred Talabi - Mildred combines her diverse work/life experience as an entrepreneur, author, journalist, communications professional, blogger and podcaster, to help students, graduates and professionals create and maintain their own fulfilling work lives.

  • Marketing your personal brand with LinkedIn, Mildred Talabi* - Your LinkedIn profile is one your most powerful employability assets. Discover the benefits of using LinkedIn as you’re entering the professional world, and practical tips on how to go about doing so effectively.

  • CV and Applications, Solent Futures*- Put your best foot forward and ensure that your CV and application form are up to scratch, tailored to the roles that you're applying for, and selling your skills in the best way possible.

  • Looking for jobs, Solent Futures - Know what you want to do, but not sure where to start looking? This session will provide you with a practical guide to help you start looking for graduate jobs.

  • One-to-One Clinic - Personal Branding, Annelies James - Knowing yourself, becoming more self aware and realising your values can help you progress yourself both personally and professionally. Discuss your personal brand and get real time feedback on your social accounts, explore your values and how you translate this into value for others both online and in real life.   • One-to-One Clinic - Navigating your career - company culture and personalities, Sarah Duggan - When applying and interviewing for jobs, you be will assessed on the knowledge, skills and experience you bring to the role. But what about your values, characteristics and personality preferences?   • LinkedIn Photographer - Did you know that members with photos get 14x more profile views on average! Once you've learnt the tips and tricks of how to use LinkedIn effectively, why not have your photo taken by our professional LinkedIn photographer?

  • Solent Alumni Panel - We'll be hearing from a panel of Solent Alumni who providing tips and answering your questions on interviews and what to do when you leave Solent. Want to put forward some questions to the alumni panel? Enter them here.


Our employers will also be hosting stands in the Lower Atrium, giving you the invaluable opportunity to network, find out more about their graduate opportunities, and ask any questions you have about life after graduation.


Also in the Lower Atrium, we'll be joined throughout the day by various services from Solent University, each of which can support you in some way after graduation. Stop by to chat to them about what they can offer you.
