Event description

Description

Join our new lecture series, starting with a very special opening!

Gigi Cocquio was born in the small village of Uggiate (Italy) and served as a Catholic priest in the Philippines, working with the people in Tondo, the largest squatter community in Asia. After being deported from the Philippines by President Marcos in 1976, Gigi came to Hawai‘i and became involved in the Leprosy community of Hale Mohalu. In 1979, he founded Hoa ‘Āina O Mākaha, with the mission of “creating peaceful communities in harmony with nature, through the eyes, hands and hearts of the children.” Together with the children of our community, Hoa ʻĀina helps to rediscover Hawaiian culture as well as the love for the land, for each other, and for the world. The Farm is a place where dreams have become a reality, by developing a barren piece of land into an educational resource center.

Gigi will share his reflections about his life of service towards community self-reliance and peace-making in Italy, on the Waiʻanae Coast, and beyond.
