Institute on Aging welcomes you to a free 3-Hour Openhouse training, to be held at 3575 Geary Blvd., San Francisco, CA 94118

Openhouse enables San Francisco Bay Area LGBTQ older adults to overcome the unique challenges they face as they age by providing housing, direct services and community programs. As a result, Openhouse has reduced isolation and empowered LGBTQ older adults to improve their overall health, well-being and economic security.

From Isolation to Inclusion: LGBTQ Cultural Humility Training is an Openhouse accredited training.

Course Description

Over 20,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) older adults 60+ live in San Francisco. Learn how you can help create safer, more welcoming services and programs for LGBTQ older clients, their families and their caregivers.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Name at least four basic terms and concepts related to gender identity and sexual orientation

  • Demonstrate understanding of relevant history and context of today's aging LGBTQ communities

  • Apply three strategies for providing respectful, trauma-informed care to LGBTQ elders

  • Collect Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Data


Presenter Information

Beck Epstein (she/they) is the Training and Outreach Manager with Openhouse, and has 10+ years of experience with workshop facilitation, social justice organizing, LGBTQ community and LGBTQ social service organizations. Beck has worked on issues of partner abuse, transformative justice, homelessness and access to primary care medicine. Beck is passionate about building the capacity of social service agencies to provide respectful, client-centered, trauma-informed care through an anti-oppression framework.

Date: Tuesday, June 19, 2018, 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Doors to the training will open at noon. The program will begin on time, so please be prompt.

Place: Institute on Aging, 3575 Geary Blvd., San Francisco, CA 94118

Directions and Parking: Limited street parking around the building, in mostly 2-hour increments. Public transportation is nearby, with the Geary bus running right in front of the building.

Attendees are welcome to bring lunch, snack and beverages into the training, but none will be provided by IOA.

Cost: No charge, but RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.

Institute on Aging will deliver the following CEs: APA, BRN, CAMFT and MCLE.

Intermediate Level: Some basic knowledge of the specific content area is required, but you need not have in-depth knowledge or skills. The activity will provide information at a level beyond the basic knowledge of the topic.

All Continuing Education certificates will be delivered digitally, within 5 working days of the event. An evaluation-test will be provided to all CE registrants, who must then attend the entire program and turn in their evaluation at the end fo the program in order to qualify for a CE certificate.

American Psychological Association (APA): Institute on Aging is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Institute on Aging maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), Provider # CEP13610, for 3 Contact Hours.

CAMFT: Institute on Aging is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for this program. IOA maintains responsibility for the course and its content. Course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs. CAMFT provider number is #135377..

State Bar of California (MCLE) : Course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit for Attorneys (Provider #13264).
