Event description

Description

Join us for a film screening and panel discussion on the intersections of human trafficking law and the criminal justice system in America. We will show a portion of the PBS documentary "Me Facing Life: Cyntoia's Story" and then have a panel discussion with experts from Central Illinois. Me Facing Life is the story of Cyntoia Brown, a 16-year-old girl sentenced to life in prison after murdering a man who picked her up for sex. Although this incident happened in 2004, Cyntoia's case has garnered media attention recently as human trafficking and legal advocates argue that she is not a murderer but a victim of human trafficking. We will discuss the intersections of human trafficking and the criminal justice systems as well as the implications of this case for human trafficking victims in the United States.

This film and panel discussion are co-sponsored by Set Free Macon County and the History and Political Science Department at Millikin University.
