Event description

Description

Friends of the Everglades was founded in 1969 by renowned journalist, author, and environmental activist Marjory Stoneman Douglas to preserve, protect, and restore the only Everglades in the world.

Friends prides ourselves on our grassroots
approach to elevate citizens’ voices, and we
make a powerful impact. We are plaintiffs in some of the most important litigation for the Everglades, defending some of the world’s most diverse and distinctive wetland landscapes; more than 3,000 species of plants and animals – at last count, 67 of which were threatened or endangered; and safeguarding the drinking water supply for more than 7 million people across South Florida.

Join us as we celebrate our 50th anniversary on April 7, 2019 – Everglades Day and Marjory’s birthday. Net proceeds from the event will support Friends’ work to carry on Marjory’s remarkable legacy of standing up to politicians and other powerful interests to defend our River of Grass.

Enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails overlooking the gardens, live music,
an environmentally-themed silent auction, and a keynote address by Everglades restoration leader Maggy Hurchalla. Whether you’re a current member or supporter, or new to Friends of the Everglades, all are welcome to come and learn about our work!
