Description

The Friends of Minesing Wetlands are excited to announce that this year our Annual General Meeting will take place outside at fantastic Fort Willow on Saturday March 30th...come and join us for a great time under the stars.

Bonus alert...we can also celebrate the 12th Earth Hour at 8:30!

Events include historical re-enactors Dennis and Ruthan Johnson who will walk us through the perils and unimaginable ways in which fur traders and First Nations men and women would have found their way to Fort Willow during wintertime in the early 1800's.

Enjoy samples of delicious period food and drink including pumpkin puree, toasted pumpkin seeds, chicken broth and cider.

6:00 Arrival, investigate the Fort and/or roast hot dogs over an open fire. Hot chocolate available for free for those who bring their own hot beverage cup.

6:45 AGM Presentation

7:00 History comes to life with Ruthan and Dennis. Snacks typical of the time period are available to sample.

8:30 Earth Hour begins. If clear skies allow, an amateur astronomer will wield her green laser to point out some constellations...bring your own binoculars for a closer look if you wish...a telescope will also be available.

Admission, parking, entertainment, hot chocolate and yummy samples are all free!

While there will be added lighting along the paths, it is suggested that guests bring their own flashlight or headlamp as well.

If desired, hot dogs will be available to cook for yourself on an open fire for those who pre-pay through Eventbrite for $2 each.

Fort Willow is recognized as both a national and provincial historic site. Established at the half-way point between Kempenfelt Bay and the Nottawasaga River, the Fort enabled a continuous trade and transportation route from Lake Ontario through to Georgian Bay. During the War of 1812, the British military used the fort as a strategic supply depot along the Nine Mile Portage route at a time when the lower lakes were occupied by the Americans.
