Event Details

Join the Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve for the Brooker Book Club every first Saturday of the month. This club is geared towards adults. Please note that registration is required due to a limited amount of seats. Please meet in the Conference Room inside the Visitors Center. *Note that books will not be provided for you.*

To ensure an enjoyable and positive discussion, please think of a question you would like to have the group discuss about the book for the month. These questions will serve as additions to those the host of the Book Club will prepare each month.

Book Club Reads for 2017:

January 7, 2017- Cracker The Cracker Culture in Florida History by Dana St. Claire This is quite a tour de force of Florida as a young state.

February 4, 2017-  Pick any book, magazine issue, ezine, mezzanine, so forth, that deals with Florida nature or history and share your thoughts (and recommendations) about what you read. It's ok if several of you read the same thing (on purpose or by coincidence.)  You may read a previous book that might have been read before you were a member of the group. We may in the future pick other topics to allow a potpourri of writings to read.  We may in the future also pick one publisher as a source of material: Florida University Press or Pineapple Press for example.

March 4, 2017- Best State Ever, A Florida Man Defends His Homeland, by Dave Barry. Dave has written many books and articles about Florida. Weeki Wachee and Tarpon Springs are just a few of the places that get the Barry treatment.

April 1, 2017- War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy. A little ditty that tells of events happening in Europe while Florida was not yet a state. (Look at the April date...)

The real selection is Craig Pittman's Oh, Florida, How America's Weirdest State Influences the Rest of the Country. The title speaks for itself.

May 6, 2017- Carl Hiaasen's, Hoot. This book is becoming a young person's classic.

June 3, 2017- Moon Pool by A. Merritt.  Merritt lived at Randolph Farms in central Pinellas at the end of his life. He and his wife Eleanor are buried at the Serenity Gardens Memorial Park right across Indian Rocks Road from Randolph Farms. Moon Pool is one of several fantasy novels that A. Merritt wrote.
