Placemaking addresses a broad set of needs and outcomes, including those related to physical and social well-being. In this inaugural webisode of Fresh Brew: Placemaking, we’ll explore how the Memphis Medical District Collaborative and local efforts around San Francisco’s Civic Center are creating a new sense of connectedness to both the place and between people.

Fresh Brew: Placemaking will explore the Power of Place, finding inspiration in cases in San Francisco and abroad. Each Tuesday morning, a local guest will interview a placemaking constituent from elsewhere in the country or world.

Fresh Brew is a new series of online morning conversations covering a variety of topics about all things architecture and design. Fresh Brew aims to provide the general public and industry professionals with engaging dialogue and to provide a space for inspiration during these challenging times.

Julie Flynn, Planner, San Francisco Planning Department

Julie is an urban planner and artist. Julie joined the San Francisco Planning Department in 2017 as the project manager for the Civic Center Initiative – an inter-agency effort to bring new amenities and improved stewardship to San Francisco's Civic Center. In this role, Julie has worked with city and community partners to advance a portfolio of projects including art exhibits, artisan markets, and more. She has also co-managed a workforce development program that provides jobs to those with barriers to employment. Prior to joining the Planning Department, Julie worked as a Project Director for the Street Plans Collaborative.

Tommy Pacello, Attorney + City Planner

Tommy is the founding President of the Memphis Medical District Collaborative, a community development organization focused on strengthening the communities between and around the major medical, educational, and research anchor institutions.

In 2015, Tommy was named one of the top 40 Real Estate Professionals under the age of 40 by Urban Land Magazine. He is the Chair for the Memphis Chapter of the Urban Land Institute, is a Commissioner on the Board of the Memphis Area Transit Authority and is actively involved with the Congress for the New Urbanism. Tommy is a frequent speaker on civic innovation and urban development issues.

Robin Abad Ocubillo | Urban Design Policy + Research

Robin has worked for over a decade in civic innovation in public space design, planning, evaluation, and policy. He is currently Senior Planner and Urban Designer with the SF Planning Department, where he leads Places for People, the first placemaking legislation of its kind in the country to streamline government processes and lower barriers for communities creating and stewarding public spaces in underutilized streets and lots. Prior to his current role at the San Francisco Planning Department, Robin worked with LADOT People St. and the Mayor’s Great Streets Project on advocacy and performance evaluation of projects throughout Los Angeles. Before that he served for several years in the Golden Gate National Parks, working on cultural landscape and visitor access projects at sites throughout Bay Area parklands.
