Event description

Description

Coinciding with the start of the Brazilian Carnaval, concert:nova takes a road trip back in time to South America, 1917, to follow the extraordinary journey of French composer Darius Milhaud to Rio de Janeiro. We follow the influence of the choros in both Milhaud’s famous Le Boeuf sur le Toit and French music in general. Choro is a type of Brazilian popular music similar in background to the celebrated Cuban son of Buena Vista Social Club fame. Choro started in Rio de Janeiro as a fusion of African-based rhythms and structures with European instruments and dance forms. Miami University Professor of Ethnomusicology and Latin American Studies, Thomas Garcia, joins concert:nova as a performer and program curator; Aimée Langrée is the director.
