ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Cantéyodjayâ is a single movement work written by Olivier Messiaen in 1948. This piece was inspired by Hindu Rhythms and experiments with total serialism. It foreshadows some ideas and sounds from his later collection of birdsongs. This is a summary of Messiaen’s technical innovations to that date and a demonstration of his ability to compose an entirely satisfying piece from an unprecedented amount of disparate elements, which made Cantéyodjayâ strikingly fascinating and challenging to both the performer and audience alike.

Maurice Ravel was a composer who paid homage to the past while bringing the influence of Jazz and innovations in harmony and technique within a traditional form. His Sonatine contains contains three movements: the first movement is like a beautiful morning song; the second movement is a charming take on a baroque dance; and the last movement brings the excitement of a long delayed reunion.

Debussy was known as an impressionist composer. He creates image, mood, and atmosphere in his music. A note is not a note, a string is not a string. They are painter’s brushes and pallets. Selections of his Preludes will be included in this program.

You will also hear the Minnesota premiere of I-Uen Hwang's The Horn of Plenty, Prelude for Piano.
