FRENCH BACH II

 Wednesday, January 31st, 2018, at 7 p.m.

Dr. Yelena Grinberg, speaker & pianist

Dear Friends!

As a sequel to my Season-opening French Bach I program from Jan. 14/18, on Wednesday, January 31st, 2018, at 7 p.m. I am delighted to invite you to FRENCH BACH II. In this Part II of my all-Bach program, I will present two of Bach's majestic French Suites - No. 3 in B minor (ca. 1722-25) and No. 5 in G Major (ca. 1722-25) - alongside his wistful and never-heard Suite in F Minor, BWV 823 (ca. 1708) inspired by the French style, the luminous Aria and Variation 16 (Overture) from his sublime Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 (1741), and his resplendent French Overture in B minor, BWV 831 (1735) for the grand finale.  Based on the courtly dances of his day, the French Suites bring together the French flair and dance-like elegance with Bach's contrapuntal Germanic style and his vocal Italianate style. They exemplify the pre-Classical galant style fashionable among Bach's contemporaries, or, as Bach's biographer, Forkel, explains to us: "They are written in the French Taste. The composer is here less learned than in his other suites, and has mostly used a pleasing, more predominant Melody." Bach's doleful French Suite No. 3 in B minor, BWV 814 (ca. 1722-25) demonstrates his gift for melodic lyricism and his inimitable contrapuntal craft, and includes a chromatically adventurous Sarabande and a fiery French-flavored Gigue full of brilliant keyboard virtuosity. In stark contrast, Bach's sunny French Suite No. 5 in G Major, BWV 816 (ca. 1722-25) - by far the most popular and most oft-played of the six - sparkles with exuberance in its sprightly Courante, its playful Gavotte, its energetic Bourree, and its final finger-twisting Gigue in 12/16 in which Bach unleashes incredible brilliance and virtuosic fireworks in breathless perpetual motion. Toward the end of his life Bach composed his immortal Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 (1741). In this late masterpiece Bach reveals the influence of the French style in the sublime opening Aria, full of lavish ornamentation and in the riveting Variation 16 (Ouverture) directly inspired by J. B. Lully's French Overture style. Bach's magisterial French Overture in B minor, BWV 831 (1735), which belongs to Part II of his monumental Clavier-Ubung, is perhaps one of the most transcendent examples of the French style with its stately and expansive opening Overture followed by no fewer than eleven contrasting dance movements, including several elegant French dances - Courante, Gavotte I - II, Passepied I - II, Bourree I - II - and concluding with the most charming and strangely titled of them all, Echo, which exploits the forte-piano contrast of the two-manual keyboard and reveals Bach's great wit and sense of humor. Don't miss this festive musical feast through the French Bach II!

Looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday, January 31st!

With best wishes for the New Year!
