Event description
Take your freelance editorial business to the next level!

About this Event

Freelancing 201 is a half-day training workshop designed for editors who already have general freelancing skills and want guidance on growing beyond the basic freelance business model. Topics include:

  • Going beyond “do work, get paid”
  • Getting new clients
  • Raising and adjusting rates
  • Adding new skills
  • Working with subcontractors
  • Speaking and writing

The workshop will be presented by Laura Poole, the founder of Archer Editorial Services and a former owner of Copyediting.com. She has more than 20 years of experience in publishing and a solid background in training and coaching, having created numerous courses and webinars, including the Editorial Bootcamp, Fundamentals of Copyediting, and Advanced Copyediting. She is also the author of Juggling on a High Wire: The Art of Work-Life Balance When You’re Self-Employed.

The schedule for the day will be as follows:

  • 8:00–8:30 a.m. Check-in
  • 8:30–11:00 a.m. Part I
  • 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Lunch
  • 12:00–2:30 p.m. Part II

Registration opens August 7 for members and August 15 for the general public. Join PEN by July 31 to get in on the exclusive early registration period, which also includes a $10 discount! (Note: Membership signup and payment must be received in full by midnight on July 31, 2019. Discount is only available August 7‒14.)

Food

You have the option to reserve a lunch with your registration. The food will come from Conexion, the café on the ground floor of Open Book, and ordering ahead with us ensures your food will be ready for you right at the start of break, meaning you will not have to order and wait for your meal. (We will not be the only people at Open Book on the day of the workshop, and the café will likely be busy.) You may also bring your own food or go offsite for lunch as long as you’re back by the start of Part II.

If you choose the Workshop + Meal ticket, you will be prompted during the registration process to select one of the following options, each of which comes with a cookie and your choice of an apple or chips as a side:

  • Tuna Salad Sandwich
  • Ham & Swiss Sandwich
  • Turkey & Cheddar Sandwich
  • Veggie Sandwich (vegetarian)
  • Buffalo Chicken Wrap
  • Waldorf Chicken Wrap
  • Gorgonzola Chop Salad (includes chicken and bacon)
  • Asian Chicken Salad
  • House Salad (vegetarian)

Gluten-free bread is available for all sandwiches, and all salads can be made without meat. Conexion may be able to accommodate other dietary restrictions upon request; please contact us at marketing@pensite.org to ask about accommodations or ingredient lists.

Venue Accessibility

Open Book has accessible parking (designated spaces located in the lot near the back door of the building), entrances, restrooms, and classrooms; elevators to all floors; and other services available as requested. All-gender restrooms are located on three floors of the building. Please contact Open Book directly if you have any questions about building accessibility.

Refund Policy

Registrations are nonrefundable except in the case of event cancellation on our part. However, you may transfer your registration to someone else using the Eventbrite system (click here for instructions) if you change your mind about attending.
