Event description

Description

The Harm Reduction Coalition provides technical assistance, capacity building, training, policy and advocacy work nationally with the goal of expanding access to harm reduction services for people who use drugs. We are based in California and New York.

CDPH's Prescription Drug Overdose Prevention Initiative is partnering with the Harm Reduction Coalition to provide support, training and technical assistance to California providers who are implementing the Naloxone Grant Program and any other program or group that is interested in Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution (OEND).

This workshop is appropriate for members of California Opioid Safety Coalitions, public health departments interested in implementing OEND, recipients of CDPH naloxone grants, non-profit community based organizations currently distributing naloxone or looking to implement this intervention, or anyone else looking to implement OEND programming at their organization. Unfortunately, this is not a community naloxone training and is not open to the public.

This workshop will focus on creating a blueprint for implementing OPEND or strengthening your existing program in your unique community setting. The workshop will have the following components:

  • Setting the context: review of opioid overdose in the US, California, and your local community, history of OEND and evidence base for providing naloxone to people who use drugs and other bystanders.
  • Review of overdose risk factors, recognizing an overdose, prevention and response strategies, including how to administer naloxone—this component will serve as a “train the trainer” for anyone interested in distributing naloxone.
  • Providing OEND in your community: how to conduct overdose prevention groups and one-on-one conversations with people at risk for overdose and other potential bystanders, including family and friends.
  • The nuts and bolts of naloxone distribution: we will examine the legal, policy and logistical issues related to naloxone distribution including standing orders, ordering, storing and distributing naloxone, data collection and engaging people who use drugs.
  • Create a plan: attendees will create a plan for implementing OEND in their community, or for expanding/strengthening their existing services.

The workshop will be in two parts, the morning session will run from 9-12pm, lunch on your own, and the afternoon session will run from 1-4pm. If you have any questions, please contact Eliza Wheeler, Overdose Response Strategist at the Harm Reduction Coalition for more information, wheeler@harmreduction.org or 510-725-8321
