Event description
Join Eastside Community Heritage for this free walking tour along Newham's Royal Docks as part of the 'Join the Docks' festival this summer

About this Event

For 2019’s ‘Join the Docks Festival’, Eastside Community Heritage will bring the memories and experiences of Newham’s Royal Docks to life through the voices of the people integral to its history. From the Silvertown Explosion in 1917 and aerial bombardment during World War II, to mass strike action and industrial redevelopment, this summer you can explore the countless events and institutions that represent such an integral part of London’s heritage.

‘Voices from the Docks’ will utilise a wide range of interactive media as part of a series of walking tours explaining the history of the area. Interview sound clips, as well as historic photographs and videos tell the tale of the docks in an accessible and enjoyable way for people of all ages, with special additional activities provided for children.

Free of charge these tours will take place over a two hour period across eight separate dates in July and August. Running along the newly opened North Dock Walkway, providing stunning views along the 3.8km promenade, the walk will meet at The Crystal (E16 1GB), ending at the Sir Steven Redgrave Bridge at the east end of the Royal Albert Dock. The walkway is fully accessible along a paved/cobbled surface with DLR stations in close proximity to both the beginning and end of the tour.
