Event description

Description

Chaddick Dance Theater will present its 13th annual concert, Free to Speak, at Austin Ventures Studio Theater on February 8th and 9th. This year’s performance features the premiere of five new dance works by Director Cheryl Chaddick and upcoming choreographers Kevin Armstrong, Katie Mae Hebert, and Cameron Oefinger. Each piece has been given space to come to fruition alongside the fullness of each choreographer’s voice, without parameters or limitations, resulting in an exciting and unpredictable evening of dance. Ranging from the silly to the savage, the somber, and the absurd, this evening will be sure to surprise you…

Chaddick’s new work, “Let’s Get These Puppies Going,” a fun and lighthearted meditation on man’s best friend, will treat the audience to live music performances by four Austin musicians. Her second work for the evening, “A Boundless Whisper,” will also feature the premiere of an original score by Aaron Sanchez, Austin educator and composer.

In Cameron Oefinger’s new work, “Six Make a Circle,” six female dancers come together to form a coven, steeped in mania and madness. An alumnus of Texas State University, local English teacher and 8th-year dancer with Chaddick Dance Theater, his choreography often seeks to emulate (and induce) the stuff of nightmares.

“Hermaphroditus,” a solo choreographed by 10th-year Chaddick dancer Katie Mae Hebert and performed by Oefinger, is inspired by Greek mythology, matadors, lotus flowers, and house music. “Hermaphroditus” represents the wholeness of self—the balance of male and female.

Lastly, Kevin Armstrong, a young choreographer on his 3rd season with Chaddick, will present “Brutal Materialities,” an absurdist piece about mating-desire, cyclical love stories, and futurity in the face of deteriorating materialities.

*Question & Answer with the cast and choreographers will follow Saturday’s performance.
