Free the Optimus Presents The Cinco de Mayo Fiesta - [hip-hop]
Fri, May 5, 2017, 10:00 PM – Sat, May 6, 2017, 2:00 AM EDT
Free The Optimus
Free The Optimus is an Asheville, North Carolina based hip hop collective focused on bringing improvisational lyricism to jazz influenced boom bap soundscapes. C.Shreve defines Free the Optimus as “a call to action—to set free our optimal ability & our optimistic perspective, and to transform the world around us.”
In live performance form, FTO consists of C.Shreve the Professor and Mike L!VE on vocals, DJ Jet on the turntables, and a rotating selection of guest MCs & musicians. The jazz / hip hop mindset of free form improvisation and collaboration is a vital component to the FTO live experience, as songs and structure are often tossed aside in favor of the energy and groove of the moment.
Free The Optimus has toured and shared stages with The Hieroglyphics, Cannibal Ox, Nappy Roots, Talib Kweli, DJ Enuff, Big K.R.I.T., Three 6 Mafia, Guilty Simpson, BJ the Chicago Kid, Planet Asia, Blueprint, The Palmer Squares, Tanya Morgan, Illogic, Rapper Big Pooh, and many more. FTO has performed at Hopscotch Music Festival, Blue Plum Festival, Beats and Bars Festival, Harvest Boone, Hidden In The Hollow, DURM Hip Hop Summit, Boone in Blossom, Raleigh Fall Music Festival, and GURP Fest.
C.Shreve's new project "Twenty Sixteens" released this summer and "FTOLive", the next full album, is being finalized and will be released in early 2017.
King Garbage is the result of an 12-year friendship and collaboration between Zach Cooper and Vic Dimotsis. Signees to NYC's Styles Upon Styles label, KG has brought a unique perspective on American Soul Music through their recordings BASH003 and Make it Sweat. In concert, the duo reveal themselves as a tight-knit rhythm section that only 11 years of hard work can behold. Their stark grooves are built simply of octave-guitar and drum-kit -- supporting Vic's dynamic vocals and suggestive lyrics. In their sound, traces of D'Angelo, J Dilla and Marvin Gaye's influence are easily detectable and revered.
Sk, the Novelist
As a member of the Asheville Hip-Hop collective Legion of D.O.O.M., Sk, the Novelist has been consistently putting out tracks through Soundcloud. The developed product is a style both lyrical and meaningful, blending in catchy melodies and carefully choosing only beats that best compliment the vocal inflections of his delivery. His soon-to-be album entitled "My Life in Rhythm" will be his first full project, and will culminate his constant work ethic over the past 6 months.
Frequent collaborators include Filthy the Philosopher, Herb the Wizard, Thiago, Free the Optimus, as well as other Cypherunivercity cats.
