Event description

Description

On October 5th at 5:30pm, the first staged reading of A Therapy Session with Myself - a new full-length drama about dealing with mental illness - will be presented at the Dramatists Guild Foundation's Music Hall.

A Therapy Session with Myself tells the story of Alex Grayson, a young college student and aspiring writer suffering from severe social anxiety, depression and Asperger's syndrome. During the summer before his senior year, he receives a mysterious visit from "himself", a human incarnation of his inner consciousness. As they interact, Alex is forced to reflect on his own flaws and personality quirks, as well as some of the darkest and most painful memories of his adolescence, while also pondering the question of whether or not he can overcome his many inner demons, and ultimately build a brighter future for himself.

This is a developmental staged reading of the play - which is approximately two hours long - and will be followed by a post-reading talkback with the playwright to allow for constructive feedback, in advance of a future full production. This reading will be directed and moderated by Melissa Maney, a playwright and director who has recently directed shows at the Strawberry One-Act Festival, the Writopia Festival and Manhattan Repertory Theatre.

The play was written by Anthony J. Piccione, whose one-act plays have been produced in New York City at the Midtown International Theatre Festival, the NYWinterfest and Manhattan Repertory Theatre, and in Connecticut at Playhouse on Park, Hole in the Wall Theater, the Windsor Art Center and Windham Theatre Guild. Additionally, his one-act play Ebol-A-Rama was recently published by Heuer Publishing (www.hitplays.com) and his columns and reviews have been frequently published at On Stage Blog (www.onstageblog.com). He received his BA in Theatre from Eastern Connecticut State University in 2016, and is a member of the Dramatists Guild.

Limited seating is available for this event, so audience members are asked to please reserve tickets in advance online via Eventbrite. Tickets are FREE for this event. However, audience members are strongly encouraged to make a donation. (Recommended donation: $10) Any funds raised from this event will go toward producing a full production of the play.
