Event description

Description

Directed by Frank Tuttle in 1942 and based off of a novel by Graham Greene, this film noir stars Veronica Lake and helped launch Alan Ladd’s career. Set in San Francisco during World War II, the film follows Ladd, a hitman furious at having been paid with marked bills reported to the police. As he tracks down his boss, another employee, played by Lake, seeks to change his course after a chance meeting. “To say the film is a success is an understatement,” wrote the L.A. Times in 1942. The New York Times called it a “melodrama straight and vicious … a good cut above the average, both in its writing and tensile quality.”

The film will begin promptly at 1:30 on the second floor of the library. Seating is first come, first served.
