The National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome says, “It only takes a few seconds to change lives forever.” Shaken Baby Syndrome is a family and community tragedy. It robs a child of a healthy, normal life and causes devastation among all family members---the child victim, parents and siblings. Parents must either cope with the death of a child or care for a child with severe disabilities. Home visitors can play a key role in reinforcing prevention through helping parents understand the dangers of violently shaking a baby, the risk factors and the triggers for it, and ways to reduce stress and frustration. All of which may help to reduce the number of children impacted by Shaken Baby Syndrome.

By the end of this training, Home Visitors will be able to:

  • Explain why baby teeth are important and discuss basic tooth development with parents.
  • Discuss "Early Childhood Caries", an oral disease, and its impact on a child's health and well-being.
  • Express ways for parents to prevent tooth decay.
  • Provide parents with strategies to improve their young children's oral health practices including feeding and cleaning.
  • Convey to expectant mothers why dental health is vital
