Event description

Description

The apparent death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who had been living in Northern Virginia as a U.S. permanent resident, while he was in Turkey visiting the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul has caused an international outcry from journalists and citizens alike, who are demanding to know what happened to him. More specifically, the clamor is to have Saudi Arabia investigate and reveal its findings on whether what happened was a calculated attempt to silence Khashoggi for publishing criticism of the Saudi regime.

SPJ DC Pro’s Foreign Press Liaison Committee has organized a discussion about the free press in other countries, led by some journalists who have worked there and experienced it first-hand. The event was in the works before news of Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance began to spread, but the situation now is a powerful backdrop for the talk about how other countries view and define free speech and a free press.

The event is set for 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 3. Information will be updated here, such as if speakers are added.

Speakers include Raza Ahmad Rumi, director of Park Center for Independent Media at Ithaca College and an editor of the Daily Times English-language Pakistani newspaper. He also helps run a self-described new-age citizen journalism website in Pakistan and is a visiting professor at Cornell.

And Mahir Zeynalov, chief editor of The Globe Post. Turkey’s government targeted him for publicizing corruption.

Moderator for the event will be DC Pro member and Foreign Press Liaison Committee co-chair Selma Khenissi, who currently works at The Georgetowner newspaper.

The panel discussion will be at St. John's Episcopal Church in Georgetown, in Blake Hall, at 3240 O St. NW, Washington, D.C. There is no charge but advance registration is required.
