Workshop Description

What’s the Big Idea? Igniting the Creative Process in Classical Piano Lessons

Research shows that students who are growing up in a digital age are more intelligent, but are scoring lower on tests measuring creative aptitude. What are some ways that teachers can offer creative opportunities in their lessons to light that creative spark? In this dynamic workshop, Dr. Kevin Olson will focus on various ways students can develop creativity though some of his newest FJH publications, including the innovative series The Perfect Start and the well-known sight reading curriculum Sight Reading & Rhythm Every Day. In addition, he will showcase some of his newest solos and arrangements at a variety of levels. Don’t miss this informative, motivational showcase!

Kevin Olson is an active pianist, composer, and member of the piano faculty at Utah State University, where he has taught a variety of courses, including piano literature, pedagogy, and accompanying. A native of Utah, Kevin began composing at age five. Since then he has been a Composer in Residence at the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, and has written music commissioned and performed by groups such as the American Piano Quartet, the American Festival Chorus and Orchestra, Chicago a cappella, the Rich Matteson Jazz Festival, Music Teachers National Association, and several piano teacher associations around the country.
