Description

The Neville Empowerment Network, Inc. is committed to educating, inspiring, and empowering all in our village! We are piloting a Literacy Club for 5th graders in South Eastern Prince William County, for the 2017-2018 school year! We are proud to share that we've received funding through Transurban to support this program, and keep it FREE for all participants.
The Literacy Club will meet twice monthly in a hybrid format: face-to-face and online during after school hours. Participants will engage in literacy activities connected to African American folklore, classic novels, and nonfiction texts aligned to Virginia’s Standards of Learning.

The following Standards of Learning (SOL's) will be covered:

5.1 The student will listen, draw conclusions, and share responses in subject-related
group learning activities.
5.4 The student will expand vocabulary when reading.
5.5 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts,
5.7 The student will write for a variety of purposes: to describe, to inform, to entertain, to
explain, and to persuade.
5.8 The student will edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization, spelling,
punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraphing.

This program will include a family literacy event, and adult component as we plan to reach the "whole child." Youth participants will create a book of their own, at the conclusion of the Club.
