Join us for a workshop and Q&A, followed by a book signing, with authors and education experts Patti Summers and Elizabeth Weise, moderated by educational consultant Carina Bellmann.

The discussion will touch upon how to foster intellect, creativity & empathy in our youngest; and how to nurture global citizenry and respect for others in our older children.

Patti Summers: Fostering Creativity and Empathy in Early Childhood

Elizabeth Weiss: An International Correspondent Reflects on Her Family's Educational Journey

Patti Wollman Summers has been an early childhood educator in Manhattan for over thirty years. In addition to her extensive teaching experience, Patti was the founding director of two pre-schools. Her Masters degree in Early Childhood is from Bank Street College, where she recently worked to help the Dept. of Education in New York City devise a curriculum for the Pre-School For All program for Pre-K. Patti has also worked with children from one to two years old in a parent-child class featuring the integration of the iPad into a classroom setting. The goal of this successful program was to demonstrate how real life and screen time can co-exist! Patti is the author of three books: Behind the Playdough Curtain and I’m Afraid of the Vampire State Building (both as Patti Greenberg Wollman) and most recently Toddlers on Technology, as Patti Wollman Summers. Patti and her husband Robert live in New York City. Together they are the proud parents of six children and also five grandchildren who range in age from 15 to 3 year-old twins.

Elizabeth Weise (it rhymes with ‘geese’) is the mother of two daughters who have been in Chinese immersion since they began school in San Francisco. Both daughters are now in high school and each has taken college-level Chinese classes. Newly admitted to Wellesley, her oldest is contemplating a gap year working in China before she begins college. Weise’s book, A Parent’s Guide to Mandarin Immersion, is the how-to guide she wished she’d had when her kids began in immersion. She also edits the Mandarin Immersion Parents Council blog. Her day job is as a national correspondent for USA TODAY covering climate change.

Carina Bellmann has been a teacher and educational advisor for over 20 years. She has a Master in Education as well as a Bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College. She has taught and been a principal in public and private schools both in the United States and abroad. Carina has extensive experience in working with students from preschool through college. Carina regularly consults with other educators to find innovative ways to transform teaching and learning. Her areas of expertise include individualized curriculum, professional development, bilingual and linguistic learning and community building. Carina currently resides in Warren NJ with her husband and two young children.

At HudsonWay Immersion School (HWIS), all students learn the academic core content in two languages: English and Mandarin, or English and Spanish. By the time they graduate they have developed advanced cognitive skills, are bilingual and biliterate. Our Pre-K through Grade 5 students consistently outscore and outsmart monolingual students at every grade level, and our 5th grade graduates gain admission to top tier private middle schools such as Pingry, Newark Academy, and Morristown Beard School. Building on this success we will be adding Grades 6 through 8 by 2021.
