Addressing the Hep C Public Health Crisis in the Coachella Valley

Learn the Best Strategies to Treat, Cure, and Refer

Educational Objectives:

  • Discuss the potential to eliminate Hepatitis C in the United States, including opportunities and challenges to implementing recommendations in the National Strategy to Eliminate the Public Health Threat of Hepatitis C.

  • Discuss HCV incidence and prevalence in the Coachella Valley, and the impact of HCV on at risk communities.

  • Discuss the provider’s role in addressing HCV among people who use drugs, including education, prevention, screening, a cure and reducing likelihood of reinfection.

  • Show the use of Fibroscan, a non-invasive diagnostics to assess a patient’s level of liver damage before treatment.

Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Tarek Hassanein, MD, FACP, FACG, AGAF, FAASLD

Tarek Hassanein, MD, is a board-certified gastroenterologist and transplant hepatologist who specializes in liver disease. He provides care to patients at Southern California GI and Liver Centers, a clinical services collaborator of UC San Diego Health. Dr. Hassanein focuses his practice on the management of viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, and care of patients before and after liver transplantation. Dr. Hassanein serves as the medical director of outreach services for the Liver Transplant Program Outreach Services at UC San Diego Health.
