Speaker: Dr. Ariel Plotek is Curator of Modern and Contemporary art at the San Diego Museum of Art

About the Lecture: "Monet and the Normandy Coast"

Raised in the port town of Le Havre, Claude Monet returned time and again to the Normandy Coast, whose motifs—including the cliffs at Étretat—would become synonymous with Impressionism. Among Monet’s most faithful followers was a group of Americans who established an artists’ colony at Giverny. Monet’s innovative approach to working out of doors and the practice he developed of painting in series will be considered in the context of both French and American Impressionism.
