Event description

Join Annette and Liz in this introductory session about GPS Group Peer Support©; including their exciting new programs -- GPS for Parents©, GPS for Academic Success© and GPS Para Salud de Mujeres/For Women's Health©. Experience our new model, learn about how it is being replicated across the country and internationally, and find out how you can bring it to your community and get involved!

GPS for Parents© is an integrated and intersectional community-based approach that supports the full spectrum of experiences including parenting, healthy living and educational pursuits. GPS for Parents© is designed to support new parents, parents struggling with perinatal emotional complications like depression and anxiety, fathers, gender non-conforming and non-binary parents, marginalized parents, parents in recovery, infant/child loss, low income parents, incarcerated parents, and parents targeted by racism, Islamaphobia, heterosexism and other oppressions.

GPS for Academic Success© is designed to support first generation college students to succeed at school despite the many challenges that they may face including English as a second language, lack of support structures, pressures of parenting and/or working while a student, and other life circumstances that may make college more challenging.

GPS Para Salud de Mujeres/For Women's Health© is a partnership with Wuku' Kawoq, a Mayan Women's Health Initiative supported by Harvard University. GPS is training indigenous Mayan health providers in critical primary mental health care for communities that have had no previous access. This is a radical new approach to ensuring that there is support for women in communities where there are otherwise no resources, with domestic violence rates nearing 100%, women marrying and having children as teenagers, and living with severe poverty.

GPS Group Peer Support© is an evidence-informed group model that gives you the map to create an empowering group experience for the people in your community. We provide a safe place for people to address the challenges they face, hear from others on the path, gain perspective and strength, and chart a course through challenging times. GPS Group Peer Support© is partnering with leaders from diverse communities to ensure that our model is being led with local leadership, by professionals and those with lived experience, and is easily accessible to those who need it the most.

GPS for Parents© is based on over 15 years of model development by both Annette Cycon and Liz Friedman in their work as the co-founders of MotherWoman’s Postpartum Support Initiative and through their development of the MotherWoman Support Group Model. They are proud to introduce GPS for Parents© and offer a new innovative approach for all parents that addresses the multitude of challenges that parents face. As always, Liz and Annette provide an engaging, educational and innovative training experience.

This session is open to experienced and first time group leaders. Providers of services to ALL parents are invited to participate in this training. Everyone is invited including gender non-binary people, men and women.
