Look up the words "distriuptive innovation," or "digital pioneer" and you will see a picture of Maria Thomas, now Chief Consumer Officer of Smart Things. Since 1999, Thomas, a CEO and investor in and advisor to early stage businesses, has focused her career on e-commerce and media. After serving as a product leader at Amazon, she moved to NPR, where – as Senior Vice President and General Manager of Digital Media -- she was the driving force in NPR’s transformation from a radio-centric organization to a multimedia one. From 2008 to early 2010, she was CEO at Etsy, the online marketplace for handmade and vintage items, where she led the company through a key period of retrenching, rebuilding and operational expansion – growing sales sevenfold to nearly $200 million. Today she is the Chief Consumer Officer of SmartThings, a company that makes it easy to connect your life and home with your smart phone, such as using an app to help you find your keys. Thomas is an expert in business development, team leadership, online communities and online marketplaces, among other things. As a consultant, she has worked with clients including American Express, Hello Wallet, Relay Rides, Living Social, National Geographic, NYTimes/About.com, the George Lucas Educational Foundation, the Knight Foundation and more. Her twitter handle is @pesmou.
