Witness: Art and Civil Rights in the Sixties

The Epic of American Civilization Murals

Event Date: Wednesday, October 8, 2014    1:30 PM - 11:00 PM

Sponsored by the Art Education Department,
the Grad Programs at MassArt, the Liberal Arts Department,

MassArt Student Development, and
the Office of Civil Rights and Diversity

Three MassArt Departments are offering a FREE field trip to Dartmouth College to view two remarkable art exhibitions. Witness: Art and Civil Rights in the Sixties, reflects upon the  Civil Rights Movement in this 50th year anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act and the Supreme Court case, Brown vs. the Board of Education, both of which occurred in 1964. The Hood Gallery on the campus of Dartmouth College is one of only three locations in the country to host this powerful art exhibit of pieces responding to civil events of the 1960s by 66 diverse artists. The exhibition offers a focused look at painting, sculpture, graphics, and photography from a decade defined by social protest and American race relations.

“Beauty and violence, art and evidence, tribulation and transcendence — so much sings out from these works,” says R.C. Baker, Village Voice, April 9, 2014 (see full review at

The Epic of American Civilization, 24 painted panels mounted permanently in Dartmouth’s Baker-Berry Library, by the esteemed Mexican artist José Clemente Orozco, is an ambitious mural painted between 1932 and 1934 to document a unique perspective on the history of the Americas from the Aztecs to the New Deal. Considered one of the finest murals in the US, it was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2013.

We will travel in a bus from and to MassArt, leaving at 2:00 on Wednesday, October 8 from Tetlow Street outside Tower to the Dartmouth campus (about 2.5 hours). Bring food or take a break to eat at one of many near-by restaurants in the college area.
