A note about our program:

The concert is at 8pm on Friday February 23, 2018, which is the 150th anniversary of Du Bois’s birth. He was the first African American to receive a PhD from Harvard, so it is especially significant that we are celebrating him at Harvard. The pieces on the program are a celebration of Du Bois’s life and ideals. It is the first of three concerts that the orchestra will be giving in honor of Du Bois’s 150th throughout 2018. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is one of the great underrepresented Black English composers, and the concert will begin with his powerful Ballade for Orchestra. Wagner’s Prelude to Lohengrin was a piece that was especially significant for Du Bois, who fell in love with Wagner’s romantic music, and especially identified with the heroic ideals of Lohengrin, one of Wagner’s great early music dramas. This is one of Du Bois’s favorite pieces, and one that figures prominently in his seminal book, the Souls of Black Folk. The final piece on the program is Dvorak’s New World Symphony, a work that celebrates the spirit of America through the eyes of a Czech composer coming to this country for the first time. It is exuberant and uplifting, and features Native American folk songs and African American spirituals.
