About the Instructor:

Eric J. Marx brings over three decades of executive management experience to his SCORE clients. During his years as a senior bank executive, he served for over 15 years as CFO at multi-billion dollar financial institutions where he led professional teams with responsibility for financial planning, risk management, investments and hedging, accounting, internal controls, and strategic business planning.

As an entrepreneur and business investor, Eric owned a 50% stake in an indoor family entertainment and restaurant business, opening a second location and expanding staff to over 100 employees. He developed integrated marketing programs featuring animated television, radio, print, outdoor, and direct mail campaigns reaching a broad market base, and implemented guest-centric staff incentive plans to increase customer satisfaction while ensuring strong internal controls over business operations.

In the town where Eric previously resided in western PA, he first served as Borough Treasurer and was then twice elected as Borough Councilman, where he chaired the municipality’s Finance Committee overseeing taxes, budgeting, police and public service contracts and benefits.

Over the years his other volunteer efforts have spanned a range of community organizations focused on education and mentoring in which he has also served in board leadership positions. He established a career planning-oriented youth mentoring program matching at-risk high school students with bank staff, and personally served as a mentor to a number of students over the years. Currently, he serves on the Utah Microenterprise Loan Fund’s Credit Committee in reviewing/approving small business loans to entrepreneurs. In addition to his work with SCORE, he remains active on the board of the English Skills Learning Center, named by the Governor as Utah’s Nonprofit of the Year, where he served two terms as Board President.

Eric has taught college-level courses in accounting, finance, micro- and macro-economics, authored a number of articles in professional publications, and has served as a guest speaker at a number of venues over the years.

About the Utah Microloan Fund:

Since 1991, the Utah Microloan Fund (formerly Utah Micro-enterprise Loan Fund) has helped hundreds of small business owners make their dreams come true by providing low-interest small business loans. Our mission is to empower underserved communities throughout Utah by providing business training and funding to entrepreneurs in start-up & existing businesses that do not qualify for traditional funding sources.

How are we different from other financial institutions? The UMLF helps people who 1) are just starting out and don’t have an operating history, 2) don’t have enough collateral for a conventional loan, and/or 3) have had life events that have had a negative impact on credit scores. We are designed to support business owners by offering small business loans of up to $50,000. Our application and loan process is simple and can provide funds for equipment, inventory, or working capital.

Our experienced staff is ready to help you on your path to small business success as we help you secure funding and provide training opportunities to help you develop the skills you need to reach your goals. Call, email or stop by our office to learn more about how the UMLF can help you today!
