American citizenship provides many privileges and protections: the right to vote, security against deportation, ability to bring more family to the U.S., increased job opportunities and more. Now you can get trusted help from a Department of Justice accredited representative to apply for citizenship at the San Jose Public Library, Alum Rock Branch.

Event details:

At this workshop, you will receive information on U.S. citizenship eligibility requirements and exemptions, get help to complete your naturalization application (N-400), and learn whether you may be eligible for an application fee waiver. Your case will be reviewed by a Department of Justice accredited representative who will serve as your legal representative with USCIS, alert you to updates in your case, and provide you trusted guidance and advice throughout the entire naturalization process. All services are free!

Before the Event:

What do I need to bring with me?

  1. Legal Permanent Resident Card ("Green Card")
  2. Social Security Card (or a copy)
  3. Driver's license or State-issued ID
  4. Completed and printed worksheet with information about your family and addresses & employers from the last 5 years
  5. Information relating to any arrest, police, court or immigration contact. How to Obtain Court Records.
  6. Payment to USCIS: check, cashier's check, or money order for $725 payable to “U.S. Department of Homeland Security." Credit card payment is also accepted. If you receive public benefits (food stamps/Cal-fresh, Medi-Cal, SSI), you may qualify for a USCIS fee waiver.
  7. For fee waiver requests, bring a "Verification of Benefits" letter from the County Social Services Department to show that you receive a public benefit. Sample Verification of Benefits Letter.

Who is hosting this event?

This workshop is a partnership between the San Jose Public Libraries and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) as part of an initiative to make immigration legal services accessible to the community. The IRC is a non-profit organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice and its accredited staff are authorized to provide immigration and citizenship legal services. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, today the IRC is at work in over 40 countries worldwide and 26 U.S. cities.
