Description

Join us for a special artist lecture with two fiber artists: Miriam Jacobs and Lisa White Reber. They will be co-teaching a workshop which will redefine the limits of disperse dyes at Peters Valley School of Craft in July. They are thrilled to host this lecture and speak about their work!

As an art student in college, Miriam Jacobs concentrated on doing figure drawings, experimental film animation, and a little sculpture. Many years later, she stumbled upon surface design, which has come to occupy center stage for about 15 years now. The technique she has explored most thoroughly is sublimation transfer disperse dye; having two of her disperse dye images published in a book about fabric art. After several years of working in disperse dye, and selling much of that work, she began to teach in various settings and to all ages, including teens and adults with disabilities. Miriam is a certified art teacher and continues to exhibit her fine art, sometimes presenting her disperse dye work as fine art. She loves teaching is excited to be teaching with Lisa Reber, whose background is radically different from hers - and with whom she shares a rapport and love of disperse dye.

Lisa White Reber is a proud, self-confessed dye geek. Another college art major, creating something in the time not spent at a ‘real’ job has been a life-long constant. This need to create led to making traditional quilts, then experimenting with the basics of dyeing quilting fabric. From there, the exploration of dyes has expanded to include many different dyes for many different fabrics, while the quilts have taken a non-traditional path. More dyeing led to the creation of a hand-dyed fabric business, DippyDyes, in 2008, followed by a regular schedule vending at quilt shows since 2009. Teaching dyeing at many of these shows followed in 2012, with students returning year after year to learn new skills for use in their own creations. After a chance to study disperse dyes with Miriam Jacobs fell through, the opportunity to teach together beginning in 2018 was natural, as both approach the medium in very different ways!
