Event description

Description

The refugee crisis has reached epic proportions. 68.5 million individuals have been forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, violence or human rights violations. We are now witnessing the highest levels of displacement on record.

One person was displaced every two seconds in the past year. The vast majority of the countries hosting refugees are among the world’s least developed. Refugee status is rarely temporary. More than half the refugees around the globe are under the age of 18, even though children make up 31 per cent of the world's population.

In response to this crisis, The Napa Center for Thought & Culture (nctcnapa.org) has created a special evening of refugee experts and medical volunteers from refugee camps, to share insights and experiences. Presentations will overview of the refugee crisis and recent accounts of the refugee camps in Lesbos, Greece and the Mexican Border. A light dinner will be served and audience members will be engaged in round-table discussions of the refugee crisis and potential actions.

Speakers include; Mark Hetfield, President and CEO of HIAS and recognized expert in refugee and immigration law, policy, and programs; Valerie Hellerman, Director of Hands on Global, who leads medical teams to refugee camps in Greece and Mexico. Dr. Georgia Milan, Family Health, Integrative Medicine. In 2013, Dr. Milan was honored by President Barak Obama with the “Champion of Change” Whitehouse Award. She works regularly in the southern US Border in Mexican refugee camps. Tama Adelman, local Napan, RN, and activist volunteers in the refugee camps in Lesbos, Greece and southern Mexican border. Lily Schroeder is a registered nurse from Alaska who works in emergency room RN and volunteers in the refugee camps with the Rohingya in the Kutupalong Camp, Bangladesh and in the Moria camp, Lesbos, Greece.
