Event description

Description

Frau Fiber brings her nationwide project 'Sewing Rebellion' to the Camera on the second Saturday of the month concurrent to our monthly Craft Lounge. Catch Frau Fiber's regiment of Faux Fraus leading sewing, altering and repurposing projects each month. As always, participants are welcome to bring their own projects and mending, or work on collage and other crafts. Shared sewing machines and sewing tips included.

The featured Sewing Rebellion project for September-December is 'Motifs, Migrations and Misappropriations,' a thoughful dive into how fast fashion exploits traditional motifs and patterns - how those patterns cross borders while the people who created them cannot. The project guides participants in transforming T-shirts into caftan shirts based on a Syrian caftan from a textile museum in Washington DC. Frau Fiber's campaign around this theme can be seen this year at North Dakota State University's Memorial Union Gallery, the Textile Museum at George Washington University, and Punkt ø in Moss, Norway.

Craft Lounge is a monthly no-host gathering of all types of crafting - bring your works in progress and make something with your neighbors! The Camera Obscura Art Lab has shared knitting, crochet, sewing, collage and drawing materials and plenty of tables for you to spread out your work.

A program of City of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs: Santa Monica Cultural Affairs (SMCA) supports the arts and the artists of one of the world's most exciting coastal destinations. SMCA produces, presents and facilitates access to cultural events for residents and millions of annual visitors, helps anchor the diverse creative sector that enriches our cultural and economic base, and promotes Santa Monica as a major cultural destination. This includes managing the City’s extensive collection of public art ranging from murals to interactive installations, with new projects being developed in conjunction with most Santa Monica public works projects, as well as offering four grant programs for Santa Monica-based arts and culture organizations, schools and individual artists, an array of artist residencies and festival and workshop programs. santamonica.gov/arts #ArtSaMo

Camera Obscura Art Lab offers arts, crafts and culture classes year-round. Polish your writing, take a better picture, learn how to make paper, knit, sew, and find a community of artists and movers! Weekly hangouts with artists through our ongoing studio residency program as well as workshops and one-off experiences bring insight into a variety of artistic work. Our community practice space offers room for you to develop your own creativity and learn from others. It all happens at 1450 Ocean Avenue in Palisades Park, where our mid-century building houses the iconic Camera Obscura mechanism and offers lovely views of the ocean, steps from the entrance to the Santa Monica Pier.
